Automation Planner Helps Ultrasound Manufacturer Improve Testing Coverage and Reduce Manpower

The client is a leading provider of medical technologies and services in the areas of medical imaging and information technologies, medical diagnostics, patient monitoring systems, performance improvement, drug discovery, and biopharmaceutical manufacturing technologies. The company develops and manufactures Ultrasound applications and devices that will create clinical value for physicians and patients. The project focused on the ultrasound product line.

The challenge
Ultrasound devices are complex systems comprised of both software and hardware modules. The product interfaces with a number of external modules and comes in multiple platforms. In order to maintain the product’s quality it is necessary to test all configurations for each product release. The company was using automation for a small part of the regression testing. Since the specialized automation experts were unfamiliar with the system itself and the testers did not have automation knowledge, every test required the involvement of 2 team members. As a result, the automation cost was high and the effectiveness low. A new automation approach was required to increase the coverage in a cost effective way.

The Solution
QualiTest implemented a Keyword Driven Testing (KDT) automation solution using the Automation Planner Platform. Automation Planner is a suite of tools that create a Keyword Driven Testing Framework, which allows every tester to plan, design and execute test automation scripts. Keyword Driven Testing is a comprehensive, cross-organization test design solution that bridges the gap between the Test Automation team and the rest of the roles involved in the testing process. While most automation solutions rely on a dedicated automation team that converts manual tests to automated scripts and executes them, in Keyword Driven Testing , test automation is focused on building and maintaining the infrastructure. The same scripts, written by the testers and other domain knowledge experts, are used for both manual and automated tests. The testers themselves are responsible also for execution and analysis.

Result
In just 2 months QualiTest implanted the project including training the entire testing team to use the Automation Planner platform to create and run tests. With QualiTest’s Automation Planner, automated regression testing coverage was increased to 90%, total coverage emerges to 35% and the manpower was reduced by 20%.
