As testers, we all know that bugs can have some weird consequences, but what we witnessed this week was like nothing we’ve ever encountered in testing before. That’s really saying something, because we’ve seen some weird bugs, but it’s not often that the bugs lead to real life, offline consequences like this one did.
We were performing exploratory testing for a national lingerie retailer in the production environment to try and track down some bugs that were proving difficult to replicate in the test environment. Our testers were making purchases and then canceling them, and since the costs were refunded, we assumed the transaction was indeed canceled. Apparently we were wrong; the bug was still present, and a lacy red negligee which nobody could really account for was delivered to our corporate office. Immediately, of course, it was tried on – by no less than our CEO himself. Now, this item would probably have been quite appealing on anyone almost other than Yaron, who isn’t so much “seductive” and “playful” (key phrases from the item’s description) as burly and… well, if the bug was odd, its consequences were even stranger.
Thankfully, the bug has been reported and fixed (unless it was just a clever prank designed to scar us forever; if so, it worked). As far as bugs go, it certainly could have been worse; besides, Yaron actually seemed pretty pleased with his unintentional purchase. To each their own, we suppose.
